Millions of hearts were broken as the unfortunate news about the fierce designer Wendell Rodricks took over the internet. According to sources, Rodricks passed away at the age of 59 on February 12th reportedly at his family residence in Goa. Considered as a pioneer of Indian resort wear, Rodricks held an empowering international presence as an Indian fashion designer. The man never shied away from speaking his mind and wore many hats as a bold speaker, writer, and an influential social activist. No one could deny that Rodricks led an interesting life overcoming quite some struggles, obstacles, failures and sensational scandals that were unwittingly stirred into major talk of the towns. Hence, we take a walk down the memory lane through his journey to the top and more.
Rodricks created catchy geometric patterns and designs in textures of white with a Goan twist, thoughtfully representing a fusion of purity, fluidity, and sanctity into one. Known for breaking rules, Rodricks had a way of looking at patterns like no one did and making those ecstatically aspirational for many. He dared to put linen and cotton on racks when other designers were busy playing safely with zari and gota designs. The revolutionizing couturier is one of the rare fashion designers to be bestowed with a Padma Shri. He was a fierce force to reckon with as set the path for open discussion on individual sexual preferences. Wendell had been happily living together with partner Jerome Marrel in Goa and had received an extreme amount of hate and negativity for the same.
As much as Rodricks is missed and mourned by the fashion and Bollywood fraternity as well as his fans alike, he too had faced a fair share of controversies due to his unabashed opinions. His most famous scandal included dragging Ashwariya Rai Bachchan’s stylist for 2019’s Paris Fashion Week. He lashed out from seeing one of the most gorgeous ladies on this planet dressed in a “sack gown” and disappointing make-up at such a huge global event and further commented on how the look would have been a more appropriate choice for the upcoming Halloween month. While on the subject of appropriate choices, he critiqued Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ revealing Grammy 2020 gown as “age-inappropriate”. Frowning upon Ralph and Russo’s bold couture design, Rodricks shamed Chopra’s long plunging neckline that went all the way till her navel on Instagram. He took a sarcastic jab about how the gown’s unnecessary neckline “goes all the way from LA to Cuba”.
