It's no surprise that Instagram aesthetic is legitimately dominating our culture and standards of beauty right now. Everyone on Instagram seems to have the same face (big eyes, plump lips, thin nose, and pointy chin— all vaguely reminiscent of a Hadid/Kardashian/Jenner mashup). That's because Gram addicts use FaceTune and a hundred other photo-editing apps that can unrealistically tuck and blur one's face into resembling their favorite celebrity. But apparently, people are now taking this filtering one more step further!
Many are opting for an in-office procedure called 'thread lifts' to pinch and pull their IRL faces into the popular cat eyes of the Instagram world. For the uninformed, thread lifts are a non-surgical brow lift that involves inserting a tiny, dissolvable thread into the face and pulling up the skin. Performed by a certified and skilled plastic surgeons or cosmetic dermatologists, it allows one to “lift” different parts of the face and body, providing one a real-life FaceTune appearance.
“The dissolvable threads are covered in microscopic barbs that anchor into the tissue, pull it up, and tack it in place,” says Shereen Idriss, MD, a dermatologist at Union Square Laser Dermatology in NYC. Though technically they can be inserted anywhere, Dr. Idriss observed an increase in patients particularly requesting the temple and eyebrow area in recent years in an attempt to get that pulled-back, smizing look. However, the visible effects fade away pretty quickly, lasting only for a few weeks at max as later they gradually dissolve into one’s face.
