Films are a part and parcel of all our lives. And we all know that the Bollywood film industry is famous for taking its inspiration from other film industries. We have all heard of how Bollywood makes its official adaptations from Hollywood or other film industries. So, what if we told you that there are quite a few Hollywood films out there that have taken their inspiration from Bollywood films. Yes, you read that right. These Bollywood films were so beautifully made, that Hollywood decided to take inspiration from them. Here are 10 Bollywood films that inspired Hollywood remakes.
02/11'Leap Year' (2010) – 'Jab We Met' (2007
The makers of 'Leap Year', claimed that the film was not inspired by 'Jab We Met'. But both their storylines are quite similar. Both films show the story of a girl who pursues her boyfriend in order to propose to him. Along the way, she meets a random stranger who helps her out. In the end, although she is reunited with her boyfriend, she chooses to go back to the stranger as she falls in love with him. Too similar to be just a coincidence. Don't you guys agree?
03/11'Fear' (1996) – 'Darr' (1993)
Not only did this film take the Shah Rukh Khan starrer's name, they even copied a couple of scenes directly. There are quite a few similarities between the two. For instance, the scene in which SRK carves Kiran’s name on his chest. David carves ‘Nicole 4 Eva’ on his chest. With only a few differences in the stories' plot lines, this one took major inspiration from 'Darr'.
04/11'Just Go With It' (2011) – 'Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya' (2005)
Another film that clearly makes it to the list of Hollywood films inspired by Bollywood, is Adam Sandler-Jennifer Aniston starrer 'Just Go With It'. This movie resembles the original movie a lot! 'Just Go With It' is about a doctor who asks his secretary to pretend to be his wife to support a lie he told his girlfriend. In 'Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya', Samir (Salman Khan) asks Naina (Sushmita Sen), his secretary to pretend to be his wife in front of his girlfriend, Sonia (Katrina Kaif). By the time Sonia realizes the truth, Samir falls in love with Naina, who already was in love with him.
05/11'A Common Man' (2013) – 'A Wednesday' (2008)
Ben Kingsley’s 'A Common Man' is an official remake of Naseeruddin Shah’s 'A Wednesday'. Both the movies had an extraordinary star cast and won several awards. Ben Kingsley carries a bag of bombs and places them at five spots. This plot is placed in Sri Lanka. To avoid the blasts, four imprisoners are demanded to let go. The plot is similar to 'A Wednesday' where Naseeruddin Shah carries a travel bag with explosives.
06/11'Pearl Harbour' (2001) – 'Sangam' (1964
'Pearl Harbor' was less about Pearl Harbor and more about a romantic love triangle between two best friends and a girl. Plots for both movies are fairly similar and the only difference between the two movies was that 'Sangam' had only one friend as a pilot whereas its Hollywood counterpart had both. The parallel lines of these war-time movies, adopting the plot of love, separation and sacrifice makes it to the list of Hollywood movies inspired by Bollywood.
07/11'Delivery Man' (2013)- 'Vicky Donor' (2012)
Vince Vaughn plays the role of David Wozniak who donates sperms just like Vicky in 'Vicky Donor', played by Ayushman Khurana. David fathers 533 children. All the parents want him to reveal his identity. He ponders whether he should do the same, while his girlfriend contemplates if he can be a good father. Similarly, Vicky’s wife is unable to conceive and realizes that Vicky was a sperm donor previously. This angers her and she leaves. Only later do they get back together when they adopt an orphan, one of Vicky’s fathered children.
08/11'Kill Bill' (2003)- 'Abhay' (2001)
The Hindi- Tamil film, 'Abhay', starring Kamal Haasan had inspired Quentin Tarantino to make 'Kill Bill'. He openly admitted that the animation action of 'Abhay' inspired him for his plot in 'Kill Bill'. Though the plot differs, this famous thriller by Quentin Tarentino had action sequences which he himself told Anurag Kashyap were inspired by 'Abhay'. In fact, not just 'Abhay', 'Kill Bill' has adapted many scenes from other films like 'Lady Snowblood', 'Samurai Reincarnation' and many more.
09/11'Hitch' (2005)- 'Chhoti Si Baat' (1975)
We are all aware that the Bollywood movie 'Partner' starring Salman Khan and Govinda is said to be a copy of 'Hitch' which starred Will Smith. But it looks like 'Hitch' itself was inspired by the plot of 'Chhoti Si Baat' where a guy who fails to woo a girl takes help of a man who makes it his profession to help people with similar problems. In fact, both the films have quite similar plot lines.
10/11'Win a Date with Tad Hamilton' (2004)- 'Rangeela' (1995)
Both these films have very similar plot lines. In 'Rangeela' Aamir Khan and Urmila Matondkar play the role of best friends who move to a new city to pursue their dreams. Urmila is then wooed by a film star. Similarly in 'Win a Date with Tad Hamilton', Pete and Rosalee are the closest buddies. Rosalie wins a date with a movie star and is smitten by him. The basic plot of both the movies is a girl caught in a love triangle between her best friend and a movie star.
