In 1987 Sunil Dutt led a 2,000-km peace march from Mumbai to the Golden Temple in Amritsar, when Sikh militancy was at its peak in Punjab. In 1988, to appeal for global disarmament, he went to Japan and walked from Nagasaki to Hiroshima.

In 1984, the actor joined politics at the behest of Rajiv Gandhi and won the Bombay North-West constituency for Congress. The actor contested the elections in 1984 and managed to retain his position as an MP in 1989, 1991, 1999, 2000 and 2004.

He also held the position of the cabinet minister for Youth Affairs and Sports (2004-2005) in the Manmohan Singh-led government. Sunil Dutt was responsible for ensuring that India was well prepared to stage the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

His last film—apart from a brief appearance in a 2007 film 'Lage Raho Munnabhai', was Rajkumar Hirani's 'Munnabhai M.B.B.S.' in 2003. The actor-politician passed away due to a heart attack at his Bandra home.
