It's a known fact that in India adoption is something that is looked down upon. Only when a couple is biologically unable to have a child, do they opt for adoption, as a last resort. But now, our Bollywood celebrities have helped bring a change to that state of thinking. There are Bollywood celebrities who have adopted children irrespective of whether they can or cannot have children of their own. When they wanted to become parents they adopted children and gave them a home and a loving family. Now that's something we can all learn from. Here's a list of Bollywood celebrities who chose to adopt children.

Bollywood actress Sunny Leone had made the headlines last year when she and her husband Daniel Weber had adopted a baby girl. They named her Nisha Kaur Weber. Now a year later the actress has made the headlines yet again and for the same reason. The couple has adopted twins whom they have named Asher Singh Weber and Noah Singh Weber. The duo had been planning this for quite some time and their decision to adopt these twins came as a pleasant surprise to everyone in the industry.

Raveena Tandon was all the rage back in the 90's. Very few people know that at the peak of her career the actress had adopted two girls, Pooja and Chhaya. In 1995, the actress was a single mother. Both her daughters were 11 and 8 years old respectively. The actress later got married to businessman Anil Thadani in 2004 and went on to have a son and a daughter with him. Today, the actress has already become a grandmother after her daughter Pooja gave birth to a baby in 2014. Her younger daughter Chhaya recently got married in a wedding ceremony in Goa.

India's very first Miss Universe had made the headlines back in the year 2000 when she had decided to adopt a baby girl. She named her Renee and raised the girl as her own daughter. Sushmita took this decision at the mere age of 25 and at the peak of her career. Once Renee grew a little older, Sushmita then decided to adopt a three-month-old girl in 2009 and named her Alisah. Sushmita is still a single parent but she's done a wonderful job of being a mother to these two girls.

Not many people know this but Mithun Chakraborty had adopted a daughter. The actor who married Yogeeta Bali in 1979 has three sons, Mahaakshay Chakraborty, Namashi Chakraborty and Ushmey Chakraborty. The star parents decided to adopt their daughter Dishani Chakraborty after their sons were born. Although adopted, Dishani is said to be the most pampered amongst all the children. Apparently, she's Mithun's favourite and is often seen accompanying her parents to various events.

Superstar Salman Khan's father Salim Khan had also decided to adopt a baby girl. Salim Khan and Salma Khan have four children together - Salman Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Sohail Khan and daughter Alvira Khan. After separating from his first wife, Salim went on to marry actress Helen in 1981. The couple then decided to adopt a baby girl who was found on the footpath beside a woman who had died. They named her Arpita. Arpita Khan today is married and has a son. And she has Salim Khan and Helen to thank for that.

Subhash Ghai is undoubtedly one of the most renowned filmmakers in the Bollywood industry. But not many know that he too had adopted a girl. He took in his youngest brother’s daughter Meghna. He kept her away from the industry and media and had later even sent her to London so she could pursue her education. Meghna is now married to Rahul Puri and looks after Subhash Ghai’s Production House and his acting schools. The filmmaker also has a biological daughter who was born 27 years after his marriage.

Famous filmmaker Kunal Kohli and his wife Ravina Kohli, decided to adopt a young girl and named her Radha. In an interview, Kunal had said, “It’s a very good thing that it takes time. It should not be easy because then people could misuse it. The organisation looks into your background, your values, etc. because they want the child to be in a happy and secure environment.” The couple had been married for 12 years before they decided to start their own family and hence they made the decision to adopt Radha.

Dibakar Banerjee is known for his quirky films like 'Khosla Ka Ghosla', 'Love Sex Aur Dhoka' and 'Oye Lucky Lucky Oye'. The filmmaker and his wife Richa Puranesh, adopted a little girl from the orphanages in Mumbai and named her Ira. Although the couple is often spotted together, their daughter is hardly seen with them. Maybe that's because they're trying to keep her away from all the limelight.

Nikhil Advani is yet another famous Bollywood director who opted for adoption. Nikhil is known for his blockbuster films like 'Kal Ho Naa Ho', 'Salaam-e-Ishq' and 'D-Day'. Nikhil and his wife Suparna are proud parents of little Keya, whom they had adopted when she was just 4 years old. Nikhil who's an absolute doting father is often spotted taking time out of his busy schedule to spend time with his much-loved daughter. Well, these celebrities certainly seem to be giving a much better life to many children.
