01/1110 Bollywood films that sparked controversies before their release
Bollywood is famous for making a variety of content-driven films, but every time a filmmaker takes the bold step of making a different film, the film is bombarded and buried in deep controversies. A majority of the population does not like it when the filmmakers try to step out of the audience's comfort zone. But thanks to our bold filmmakers who have stood their ground, we now have a variety of beautiful and amazing films, which will be remembered for generations. Here are 10 Bollywood films that sparked controversies even before their release.
02/11'Padmavati'
Unless you live under a rock you probably know all about the controversy surrounding this Sanjay Leela Bhansali magnum opus. From beating up the filmmaker to burning down the film's sets, there's hardly anything that the makers of this film have not endured. Members of the Karni Sena have actively voiced their opinions about the film distorting the original history that it is based on. Nevertheless, the relentless filmmakers have assured the audience that the film will release on December 1, 2017, and honestly, we can hardly wait to watch it.
03/11'Bajirao Mastani'
This is another film starring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, which got embroiled in controversies. The descendants of Peshwa Bajirao and Mastani accused the makers of misrepresenting the historical characters. From costumes to dialogues, the descendants of these royals claimed that the film totally misrepresented what happened in reality. Well, the film went on to be a hit anyway.
04/11'Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela'
Since the title of the movie had the name Ram, which is based on the Hindu mythology, the sentiments of the religious followers were said to be hurt. An FIR was filed against the actors and director as well. Although the makers of the film assured the audience that the film was in no way connected to the mythological characters, they still faced plenty of backlash from the audience.
05/11'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil'
In the wake of Uri attack, Cinema Owners Exhibitors Association of India (COEAI) decided not to release any movie in which a Pakistani actor had worked. Unfortunately, this happened right before the release of Karan Johar's movie, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, which starred Pakistani actor Fawad Khan. The fate of the movie was in the dark for a very long time. The director had to deal with threats from political groups. He finally broke his silence and issued a video statement to clarify his stand on the issue. The movie saw the day of light after a lot of ruckus.
06/11'The Dirty Picture'
The film was loosely based on the life of south Indian actor Silk Smitha. The character's uninhibited expression of sexuality was enough to raise eyebrows. But what started the real trouble was the film's poster. Silk's brothers had a problem with that and sent a notice to the makers of the movie. But despite the entire ruckus, the Vidya Balan starrer still impressed the audience and critics alike.
07/11'Barfi'
The controversy began when people noticed that a few scenes from the movie 'Barfi' were eerily similar to scenes from Charlie Chaplin's movies. But filmmaker Anurag Basu specified that all they did was take inspiration from Charlie Chaplin's character, and claimed to pay homage to him. Well, it seemed like their way to pay homage went terribly wrong. Nevertheless, the film starring Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, and Ileana D'cruz went on to become a major blockbuster hit.
08/11'Udta Punjab'
The subject of the movie became its own problem. The movie was focused on the excessive use of drugs in the state of Punjab. The censor board wanted to cut a lot of important scenes as the language was not deemed appropriate for the audience. But luckily, the makers of the film didn't agree to it and fought back stating that the point was to highlight the issue not to hide it away. Sadly, the movie was also leaked before its release.
09/11'pk'
This was the movie that united all religious groups. Not by love, but by being against this movie that highlighted the superstition practiced by every religion. The movie had to bear the wrath of plenty of religious groups but it did well after its release.
10/11'Kurbaan'
Kareena's bare-back in the movie's poster was the beginning of trouble. Shiv Sena and other Hindu groups protested against the bare-back poster of her film co-starring Saif Ali Khan. The right-wing groups demanded a ban on the film and defaced the posters in parts of the country. The party went as far as sending Kareena a saree urging her to cover up!
