The filmmaker is an Indian American filmmaker based in New York City. Her production company specializes in films for international audiences on Indian society, whether in the economic, social or cultural spheres. Among her best-known films are ‘Mississippi Masala’, ‘The Namesake’, the Golden Lion-winning ‘Monsoon Wedding’ and ‘Salaam Bombay!’ She has touched upon some of the boldest subjects. The film takes its title from the ancient Indian text, the Kama Sutra and serves as a common link between the characters. The film stars Rekha, Indira Varma, and Naveen Andrews in pivotal roles. The filmmaker is an Indian film director, screenwriter and producer. She is known for the biographical social drama Amu (2005), which was based on her own novel of the same name. Amu, which explores the suppressed history of the genocidal attacks on Sikhs in Delhi in 1984, was critically acclaimed upon release and earned her the National Film Award in the Best Feature Film in English category. Her next film, the 2015 drama Margarita with a Straw, was a major critical and commercial success as well. In 2012, she co-wrote ‘Chittagong’, directed by her former husband Bedabrata Pain which is about the Chittagong armoury raid of 1930. The film stars Manoj Bajpai as Masterda Surya Sen. ‘Margarita with a Straw’ is a drama film directed by Shonali Bose. It stars Kalki Koechlin as Laila, a teenager with cerebral palsy who moves from New Delhi to Greenwich village for her undergraduate education and comes of age following her complex relationship with a blind girl, played by Sayani Gupta.readmore
