We've always been told that summers are the best season to exercise and lose weight. But what if we told you that contrary to popular belief, it is actually the winter season that is ideal for shedding those extra kilos? Our bodies store two types of fat. One is known as white fat which is what makes us gain weight and the other is known as brown fat which is converted to energy for the body. During the winters, our body starts stocking up on brown fat to burn it for energy to protect us from the harsh weather and keep us warm.
This shows that the body ends up burning more calories just to keep us warm than it does when we exercise. “When we’re cold, we first activate our brown fat because it burns energy and releases heat to protect us,” says a researcher. “When that energy is insufficient, muscle contracts mechanically, or shivers, thereby generating heat.’’ Did you know that shivering for just 15 minutes can help you burn as much as 100 calories?
“Winter is a great time for anyone who wants to work out—if you’re looking at body and muscle building the gym is the place to be. For those who just want to stay fit or shed those kilos—you could alternate between three days of outdoor activities and three days of weight and strength training inside the gym,” says a fitness trainer. Well, go out and get started on that exercise we say! Stay tuned for more updates.
