It has become a norm these days to have a big, fat wedding. But a recent study conducted by two American researchers states that doing so could also lead to a big, fat divorce. Andrew Francis-Tan and Hugo M Mialon from the Emory University in Atlanta conducted the study. They conducted a survey on over 3,000 married couples in the US and found that “the duration of marriage is inversely associated with spending on the wedding ceremony.”
“Specifically, in the sample of men, spending between $2,000 and $4,000 (£3,000) on an engagement ring is associated with 1.3 times greater hazard of divorce as compared to spending between $500 (£376) and $2,000,” their study stated. They also found out that spending on the honeymoon instead is, “significantly associated with a lower hazard of divorce.” Well, at this point it certainly seems like spending more on the honeymoon rather than the wedding seems like a better idea.
