They all offer a variety of lipsticks and lip colours that promise to stay on for hours and hours and still not smudge. But did you know that lipsticks weren't always smudge-proof? Chemist Hazel Bishop came up with the kiss-proof formula after World War II, while he was working in dermatologist’s laboratory.
02/8Feminists used to paint their lips as a sign of emancipation
At one point in time, when feminism was just beginning to take the front stage, feminists like Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and more all painted their lips as a symbol of emancipation. They did this while marching in the 1912 NYC Suffragette rally. And well, we must say lipsticks do still make statements even today don't they?
03/8Women weren't really wearing black lipstick in old movies
Even today when you come across some old film from when they used black and white colours, you might wonder why the women were so enthusiastic about the goth look with their black lipsticks. Well, turns out they weren't wearing black lipsticks at all. Back then, the film stock was rather sensitive to colour which is why red would pick-up as black on the screen.

Yes, you read that right. Most women who wear lipstick on a daily basis, tend to eat approximately 2 kg of lipstick in their entire lifetime. Well, we suppose that's a good way to presume where all of those extra pounds have been put on from.

Women have been obsessed with lipsticks from the time they were invented. So, they pretty much wore every shade possible. Moving away from your nudes, reds, pinks and even blacks, during the 60's white lipsticks turned into a big trend. They went the ice princess way and applied white lipstick to show off their anti-hippie lifestyle.

Well, turns out this might be weirder than everything you read before. In Tudor, England, back in the days, a law was passed that if a woman wore lipstick during her wedding, her husband had the right to annul the marriage. Looks like wearing lipstick was a way of rebelling back then.

Guerlain’s exclusive KissKiss Gold and Diamond Lipstick is currently the world's most expensive lipstick. It costs about $62,000 (Rs 4,261,570 approximately). Well, turns out it’s not the lipstick you're paying for but the tube which is made of 199 diamonds and 110 grams of gold.
08/8Queen Elizabeth I was super fond of lipsticks
Well, now that's what we call a true Queen. Queen Elizabeth I was so fond of lipsticks that she even wore it on her deathbed. What's more is that she even allowed lipsticks to be used as a form of currency. Wouldn't it be great if we could bring about that rule again?
