With the popularity of compassionate shopping, shoppers are now becoming more conscious about fashion. The advancement in the fashion industry has enabled us to finally realise the importance of what we were putting in our closet. In the midst of this fashion revolution, here’s a piece of good news to accelerate your choice of animal-free fashion-‘Desserto’. A one-of-a-kind leather is said to be the first organic leather, made from cactus, according to the latest vegan and plant-based news portal.
Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez are two entrepreneurs from Mexico who just created leather is probably the most cruelty-free way. This leather is solely made out of prickly pear. Yes, you read it correctly! The duo claims to not use toxic chemicals, phthalates, or PVC in their designs. It is 100% organic, sustainable and more importantly, biodegradable. It is flexible, breathable and can last upto 10 years, better than animal leather we would say. Coming back to its texture, it is possibly the closest to actually animal leather, minus the animal cruelty!
From leather accessories to clothing to even something as tough as furniture, this leather can be effectively used in any.
Apart from its good well, ‘Desserto’ is receiving applause around the globe for being environment-friendly. The adversities of using toxic chemicals and compounds like, formaldehyde, cyanide, arsenic, and chromium are no joke. These chemicals are highly involved during the tanning process of leather. Not only they pollute marine life, but it can also cause health hazards to lives on earth. The incorporation of a plant-based substitute can alone save the land from tons of plastic waste.
“We identified that the problem of environment pollution was serious,” López Velarde reported to the FashionUnited. “The idea of using this raw material was conceived because this plant does not need any water to grow, and there is plenty of it throughout the Mexican Republic,” López Velarde explained.
“Currently, the volume used by the fashion industry alone is huge, almost 79 billion cubic meters, which is enough to fill almost 32 million Olympic-size swimming pools,” López Velarde added.
Despite its Eco-friendly properties, we were surprised to know that the company has not levied a hefty charge on its creation. This should be enough to convince you to try out the cactus leather.
