A new study has found a link between vaping and wheezing in adults. Wheezing is caused by abnormal airways that result in you breathing with a whistling or rattling sound. The condition can lead to serious health conditions like heart failure, lung cancer and sleep apnea.
Close to 28,000 adults were involved in the study. Through the research, the team found people who choose to vape have a significantly high risk of experiencing wheezing compared to those who choose products that contain tobacco.Adult vapers could experience wheezing and related respiratory symptoms like difficulty in breathing.
"The take-home message is that electronic cigarettes are not safe when it comes to lung health," Deborah J Ossip, a professor from the University of Rochester Medical Center in the US, told a news portal. Adding, "The changes we're seeing with vaping, both in laboratory experiments and studies of people who vape, are consistent with early signs of lung damage, which is very worrisome."
E-cigarettes are often thought to be less harmful than regular cigarettes that contain tobacco. However, many worry about the long-term health consequences of vaping. Researcher are concerned many young people will opt to try vaping without knowing about the side effects it can have like allergies, loss of immunity and infections. Further studies are needed to understand if vaping causes wheezing and identify what links the two together.
The study's findings were originally published in the journal Tobacco Control.
