Did you grab an extra large piece of cake when it was your colleague's birthday recently? Did everyone decide to pitch in to buy fries for lunch at work last Monday? Well, turns out, your workplace is the one place which can ruin your diet completely. According to a study, junk food is the most prevalent kind of food in workplaces. And this is, of course, not helping the cause of tackling obesity across the world.
“The leading food types obtained included foods typically high in solid fat, added sugars, or sodium, such as pizza, regular soft drinks, cookies or brownies, cakes and pies, and candy,” the paper stated. When workers were surveyed, more than 23% of them reported either getting free food at work or ordering in. This food was high in empty calories, sodium and refined grain. What's more is that most of these people might just be stress eating.
“Incorporating food-service guidelines into wellness programs can help employers offer appealing and healthy options that give employees a choice,” said Stephen Onufrak, the lead investigator. Well, the next time you think of ordering a burger at work, do yourself a favour and order a salad instead. Stay tuned for more updates.
