When it comes to the topic of sex, there's a lot we Indians tend to keep hidden. It's no secret that sex is still a pretty taboo subject in India which is also why most schools don't even bother having a sex education class for children. And since most Indian parents are uncomfortable discussing the topic with their kids, this ends up with the children growing up without any knowledge and remaining ignorant. And that is not a good thing to be. So, if you've been wondering how to opt for a sex education session with your child, here are a few ways in which you can do it.
Start as early as possible: A lot of people keep waiting for the right time to talk about sex with their children. But that's just it, there isn't a right time to do it. You just have to get started when you believe that they're old enough to truly grasp what it means. You also need to refer to things by their names; so vagina needs to be named as such and so does penis. Do not use a gazillion other names to describe things. Make sure to talk to them about consent as well.
Have a heart to heart conversation: Most of you might wonder how to go about the topic. The easiest way is the direct approach. Sit them down and have an honest conversation about the topic. Ask them if they have any questions and most importantly if there's something they ask you that you aren't aware of, make sure to tell them you'll get back to them and then give them a proper answer later on.
Help destigmatise the topic: This isn't something that you need to just do and get over with. It's something that your children should be able to rely on you with for the rest of their lives. They need to be able to talk to you freely without fear of judgement or ridicule. So, make sure to help destigmatise the topic and to let them know that you're always going to be there to help answer all the questions they might have.
