Looking to change your hair colour? Experts say don't dye your hair just before getting your period. Hair colourists advise against getting your hair bleached just before your period begins because the bleach will cause more pain on your scalp. You become sensitive to pain, more so than usual, during this time.
"Ask any hairdresser in the works and they will tell you that time if the month is a factor. We know purely by experience of watching clients twitch in our chair," Sophie Hilton, founder of Not Another Salon, told a news portal. Adding, "But scientifically there is a reason too, your pain threshold is much lower sure to a drop in oestrogen, and that goes for everything."
The tingles on the scalp while you dye your hair may feel more irritating during those days before your period. A 2003 study conducted by a team from the University of Michigan found that when estrogen levels in women change, it can affect pain sensitivity during the menstrual cycle. According to the study, high estrogen levels can cause the brain’s natural painkiller system to release releasing endorphins, which helps to suppress the pain. However, low levels of estrogen do not cause the brain’s natural painkiller system to respond in the same way and increase sensitivity to pain.
"I have had patients report a sensitivity to pain just before menstruation. This can occur due to the accumulation of blood in the uterus which results in uterine contractions; this opens the cervix, releasing the period blood 2-3 days later, " Dr Alex Eskander, Consultant Gynaecologist at The Gynae Centre, told a news portal. Adding, "These mild contractions result in cramps before and during the period, making the uterus sensitive to touch. Some women may notice pain or sensitivity during intercourse due to this."
However, not all women have the same experience during menstruation. More research is still needed to fully understand this association. However, experts warn it is better to be safe than sorry. Besides, waiting for a few days more to get your hair done isn't going to hurt anyone right?
