Uber's self-driving car program had pretty much become the talk of the town. But now it has been making the headlines for all the wrong reasons. On Monday morning, one of their cars in autonomous mode hit and killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona. In response to this the company has immediately suspended its self-driving cars in its pilot programs. The woman was walking out on a crosswalk when she was hit. Although she was rushed to the hospital she succumbed to her injuries. The company has now suspended all its programs in San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Toronto, and Arizona.
Now, a letter from the California Department of Motor Vehicles to Uber's autonomous vehicle program also shows that the company has decided to not renew its testing permit. The current permit is set to expire on 31st of March. Check out the letter below:
An Uber spokesperson also stated, "We proactively suspended our self-driving operations, including in California, immediately following the Tempe incident. Given this, we decided to not reapply for a California DMV permit with the understanding that our self-driving vehicles would not operate on public roads in the immediate future." Stay tuned for more updates.
