Food advertisements are now being linked to unhealthy eating habits among people. As per a recent study, the background and situations portrayed in food advertisements influence consumers to buy unhealthy food which is also why more and more people around the world are becoming obese. The study has shown that certain types of advertisements make people more prone to unhealthy cravings.
An example here could be that when you go to a movie theatre and watch an advertisement that contains popcorn, it may invoke the desire for you to get popcorn as well. A lead researcher said that holistic thinkers who connect everything to one another are more likely to fall prey to these situations. Whereas an analytical thinker who likes to isolate every situation is less likely to give into such cravings.
"Regulations on advertisements could be a strategy in countries that are trying to help people make healthier food decisions,” the researcher said. “Consumers could also become more aware of their thinking styles and make informed choices,” he added. “We aren’t claiming to solve the obesity problem, but we hope this research can be one part of the solution,” he concluded.
